The one-year prison sentence of Women’s rights activist Farzaneh Jalali has been upheld by the Provincial Court of Appeal. The sentence was issued by the Branch two of the Kermanshah Islamic Revolutionary Court in November of last year on charges of “propaganda against the state”.
“My sentence was upheld by Branch 18 of the Kermanshah Court of Appeal, presided over by Judges Qalkhani and Hassanzadeh, and the verdict was served on me today through my lawyer,” the civil activist confirmed to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN).
According to Ms Jalali, she was charged in the first court with “propaganda against the state” but she was acquitted of espionage charges and membership in opposition groups.
Farzaneh Jalali was arrested on February 23, 2017, by agents of the Intelligence Ministry’s Office in Kermanshah. and she was interrogated for 17 days at the Ministry of Intelligence Detention Centre before being released on a bail of 3’00 million tomans on March 13.
Even after the release of Jalali, the Kermanshah Intelligence Office summoned her several times and pressured her to cooperate with the security services and she was eventually forced to leave the country due to such pressures.
Farzaneh Jalali, a graduate of the University of Tehran with a degree in Anthropology, is a former member of the Islamic Association and former editor-in-chief of the Sobh newspaper.
