The families of a number of prisoners in Bukan Prison, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, have told the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) that the Buken Prison’s Chief called Habib Mohammadi had beaten and threatened prisoners.
Bukan Prison has about 250 inmates held in two separate wards. The high population density of prisoners and the prevalence of the Covid-19 virus have raised concerns among inmates but the prison chief has refused to release qualified prisoners on furlough contrary to other prisons under the pretext of not being able to hold a classification council meeting.
Habib Mohammadi has been appointed as the new head of the prison since April of last year, during which time he has personally beaten prisoners who have protested against this situation several times, the source added.
The families of the detainees said that in the past few days, Borujeni, the director-general of the West Azarbaijan Prisoners’ Prison, had visited Bukan Prison and the prisoners had protested against the behaviour and beating of the prison chief, but the director-general had responded that the beating of the prisoners was carried out with his knowledge and support.
