A prisoner who had been taken to the hospital from Orumiyeh Central Prison two weeks ago due to suffering from asthma and heart problem, died in hospital on Feb 28.

Farigh Mohammadi was in prison for drug-related crimes. He was initially sentenced to life imprisonment but his prison term was later reduced to 25 years.

Although there have been speculations about the death of this prisoner as a result of the Coronavirus, no institution or authority has commented on the exact details of his death.

Moreover, an informed source has told the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) that four prisoners had been transferred from Orumiyeh Central Prison to the hospital.

“A prisoner from ward 3-4 and three other prisoners from ward 14 were unprecedentedly taken to a hospital outside the prison last night and this morning respectively.”, he added.

“The reason for the sudden transfer of these prisoners has not been announced yet, but there are rumours that these prisoners may have been exposed to coronavirus in addition to the severe mental pressure to which both the prisoners and their families are subjected. “, a family member of political prisoners has told KHRN while expressing concern over the situation at the Orumiyeh Central Prison.

“The prisoners held in different wards of Orumiyeh Central Prison have been banned from interaction with each other and security levels are high at this prison.”, he added.

KHRN had earlier reported a possible outbreak of the Coronavirus and a human catastrophe in various Iranian prisons.
