Following the news that the school janitor of “Rahe Shohada” had sexually harassed a 12-year old Kurdish female student in October 2017 and failure of authorities to prosecute the accused janitor, some Kurdish citizens living in the neighbourhood gathered in front of the school in protest to this incident. The law enforcement and plain clothes forces confronted the protesters and fired at them which resulted in several protesters being injured while nearly 200 Kurdish protesters were arrested.

The detainees were interrogated for 3 days to one month at the detention centres of Islamic Republic of Iran Guard Corps (IRGC) and Intelligence Ministry in the city of Orumiyeh and later transferred to the Orumiyeh Central Prison. All the detainees, except for 2 people named Safdar Abdollahi and Ahmad Jahangiri, were released on bail.

In an interview with Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN), One of the people who was arrested for a month in October last year and later released on bail stated that “on Oct 23, 2017, the plainclothes forces attacked the protesters in front of the Orumiyeh “Rahe Shohada” school with batons and stones. As a result, the peaceful gathering led to violence and a number of protesters set fire to the school”.

According to this source, the plainclothes and special unit forces arrested dozens of protesters and ordinary citizens living in the school neighbourhoods and transferred them to Security Detention Centres.

Following these arrests, 64 detainees were tried on charges of involvement in the destruction and expropriation of state property, participation in the expropriation of private property, disturbing public order by spreading derogatory statements, insulting government officials while performing their duties, the loss of state documents during the fire, disobeying the officers when carrying out their duties, harassment and bullying women and threatening them with weapons. Their trial was held at Branch 112 of the Criminal Court(2) of Shahid Beheshti Complex on August 29.

The source further stated that “29 of the detainees were acquitted from the charges and 35 others faced a heavy sentence. Out of these 35 people, only 30 of them were present at the trial and their sentences were issued in absentia. Despite all the events which happened in this connection, the janitor who was accused of sexual harassment in Rahe Shohada school was acquitted from the charge due to lack of sufficient evidence.
