Akbar Lakestani, an Iranian-American citizen was arrested last week at the Sarv border after entering the Iranian territory in West Azerbaijan province.

Lakestani was able to call his family for the first time since his arrest on October 3, 2019 and informed them of his transfer to Orumiyeh Central Prison.

Akbar Lakestani is a former chairman of the City Council of Shoot and has a history of participating in the eight-year Iran-Iraq war. The Iranian security forces arrested him in 2007 and then was sentenced to three years in prison by the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Khoy on charges of “propaganda against the state” and “insulting the authorities”.

He succeeded in fleeing Iran when he was released from prison in 2009 and later sought refuge in the United States.
