During the past month, women imprisoned at Khoy Prison have been transferred to the prison meeting hall, where they are kept in unfavourable conditions without access to a bed, breaks in the prison yard or weekly visit, on the pretext of carrying out repairs.
Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has been informed that, in early October, prison authorities have transferred 40 female prisoners to the prison’s meeting hall on the pretext of carrying out some repairs at the women’s ward of Khoy prisoners. The prisoners have had to sleep on the floor and they have been deprived of the right to breaks in the yard since then.
Moreover, due to holding of female prisoners in the meeting hall during the past month, all male and female prisoners have been deprived of the right to weekly visits and this issue has prompted prisoners to protest.
In response to the protest, prison authorities have promised to resume the visit of prisoners in the courtyard of meeting hall next week.
It should be noted that Zainab Jalalian (a Kurdish political prisoner) and nine prisoners of ordinary offences went on a 3 days hunger strike earlier in August in protest to being deprived of weekly visits and basic prison facilities but they ended their strike with the promise of prison authorities for lifting these deprivations.
