On Sunday, July 16, 2017, Twenty-three political and religious prisoners were transferred from different parts of Orumiyeh Prison to ward 12 (the political prisoners’ ward) as ordered by the authorities of Orumiyeh Central Prison.

“The authorities of Orumiyeh Central Prison recently transferred the majority of political and religious prisoners who were previously held in various wards of this prison to Ward 12, known as the political prisoners’ ward. In this regard, on Sunday, July 16, sixteen religious prisoners accused of “links to Salafi groups”, five political prisoners accused of membership in Kurdish parties and two prisoners accused of connection with opposition organisations were transferred to Ward 12 from various wards,” an informed source told Kurdistan Human Rights Network.

Earlier, 10 political prisoners, one prisoner accused of security offences, and eight non-political prisoners were detained in ward 12. So now a total of 42 prisoners, including the 23 newly transferred prisoners, are kept in this ward.

“At the moment, there are 32 religious prisoners and 29 political prisoners in the other wards of Orumiyeh prison, and prison authorities have said that all these prisoners will also be transferred to this ward while the non-political prisoners detained in Ward 12 will be transferred to other wards,” the source added.
